Music

We use the CUSP Music curriculum to deliver music lessons in our school. The CUSP Music curriculum has been purposefully built around the principles of evidence-led practice. This is to ensure that there is a focus on high-quality development of children as musicians. The curriculum is carefully designed to build pupils’ musical knowledge and develop their competency and confidence as musicians. Each block includes the study of significant musicians and musical works, with the intention of exposing pupils to a wide range of music that will inspire them and connect them to the world around them. The curriculum is built to support non-specialist teachers in developing their own subject knowledge and delivering excellence in music education. Core areas of study include singing, listening and appraising, composing and improvising and instrumental performance. These are built cumulatively throughout the curriculum to ensure that all pupils develop their engagement with, and knowledge of, music over time. This includes a focus on learning to play a range of instruments confidently. CUSP Music aims to build a strong and rich musical culture in schools, in which pupils can thrive.

At Wreay C of E Primary School we see music as a form of communication and understand that it can speak a different language to each and every one of us.

We embrace musical opportunities as not only a way to foster a love of music and promote the enjoyment of participation and performance for all but, also to promote and provide further opportunities to boost school improvement, improve learning skills, foster team work, build life skills, underpin better behaviour, encourage creativity and then utilise all of these skills as an educational building block. Pupils are given the opportunity to excel and understand the power of music, and through high quality teaching and learning as well as a fully engaging curriculum and enrichment opportunities, pupils are able to move forward with a strong understanding of themselves and others.

They can realise that music is not only fun but that it is for life. We use the Cumbria Music Service to provide opportunities for children such as Musical Mondays.

This school year we were extremely proud of our Melodic Minors School choir, who brought back the first place trophy, winning the Carlisle and District Music and Drama Festival Small Schools (with choirs containing less than 30 pupils) for the 6th consecutive year in a row.
